Some say it has been a "Bazzar and bumpy road" For Johnny Depp, starting way back when he longed to become a famous rock star...only to be continuously dissapointed after being refused to do gigs leading to his band to eventually split. Then moving forward into more "serious" acting to have his Reputation crashed by being thrusted into a stereotype of being the "teen pin up". Johnny did not give up. He continued down that path he knew he was destined for. So strongly moving against his "status" he began his long tedious wiersome journey in which he eventually was able to substantiate himself to be one of the worlds most dauntless, enterprising, fearless and adventurous actors of all time!
He was born as John Christopher Depp II on June 9th1963, in Owensboro, Kentucky. His father (John) was an engeneer and his mother Betty Sue was a waitress. Johnny was always very close to his mother and even closer to his grampa. He recalls visiting his PawPaw often when he would join him in picking tobacco together. Johnny was 7 years old when his grandfather died and he, naturally, was devistated. He was all the more traumatized when his family up and moved to florida soon after. His father had gotten a steady job there as Director of public works at Miramar...it was the best choice for the family, then being used to living out of suitcases moving from place to place staying in motels and shifting homes. The number being a little over a dozen places Johnny once had to try to call home.
On the topic of his familiy, Johnny also had siblings who all had to endure this as well. Debbie and Christie His sisters and his one brother Danny. Christie is now Johnny's personal manager, and Danny (known As DP) is now a screenwriter.
Johnny was an inquisitive child , at the age of 8 he held a very keen intrest in Evil Knievel himself as well as world war 2 which also sparked his interest. His short lived school life eneded at the age of 16. It was then when Johnny decided to strive to become a rock star picking up smoking, then drinking and along came drugs. Loosing his verginity at 13, and his parents devorcing at 14, his life had completly derailed with acts of theft and vandalism .
Johnny was a regular church goer when he was back in kentucky. Thats where he found his love for music believe it or not. His uncle was a preacher. As a young boy he liked gospel music and had recived a guitar from his mother when he then secluded himself into his room and eventually taught himself how to play. Eventually he turned into a fairly decent guitarist and played amongst other garage bands and he found himself making around 30$ a night at some of Florida's nightclubs. They had named themselves "The Kids". The band started to get better and better with each day that passed altough Johnny was still underage and found himself sneaking into clubs through the back door and then sneaking back out after the first set. Eventually the band was even good enough to open for the likes of B-52's and Iggy Pop.
With the new found fame Depp's band left thier home behind in search for better popularity and the possibility of getting recognized and went to Los Angeles. Continuing with his deviant behavior of dropping out of school, straying away from his broken family across the country and giveing himself a "bad boy" image, the only thing left to do was get married. And so he did.
This was one of the best things that Johnny could have ever done. It was the doing of his new wife (5 years his senior) make up artist Lori Anne Wilson had introduced Johnny to actor Nicolas Cage who talked Johnny into meeting his agent Ilene Feldman which reluctantly got him an audition for a movie by Wes Craven. Craven had asked his daughter for some insight and she said she liked Depp. Taking her advice, he helped Johnny along to make his first film debut in 1984 as a yound stud in the film "Nightmare on Elm Street". Alltough music was his first choice this was definitly better than what he had been doing before his wife had introduced the two. The Kids started to struggle with the band eventually splitting because of no future, to make ends meet Johnny was on the phone selling ball point pens. Thanks to her suggestion that he try acting, a young star was budding.
It was not long after that, that Johnny decided to take some serious acting classes at The Loft (an acting school in LA) that he devorced his ever supporting wife. No to long after that he won a small role as Private Lerner in the film Platoon, Oliver Stones Oscar winning film. This being one of the only acting parts he had in a couple years to come. Johnny just could not find work. He had appeared in a few TV shows and movies and had found himself in another band (Rock City Angels).
Then his life took a turn for the better. Fox was starting a new TV show involving a undercover cop squad of young police working in schools trying to abolish teen crimes. He would play Officer Tom Hanson. Depp having his future in his own hads turned down the part at first. He thought it was worng for him wanting to become a serious actor. The producers wouldnt have that. They thought Depp was perfect for the part and there was no one else to fill the part. They asked Johnny again and this time he went with it. Another good move on his part. Not knowing that the show would take off like it did. Tom (johnny) was the most popular charactor on the show and Depp was getting tonnes of fan mail. He was also making some great cash (45,000 per episode)... Not too bad! One of the best, but possibly one of the worst things Johnny could have done as well. This is the move he made that got him into the teen pin up stereotype. Johnny might have been stuck.

Just as he thought that there was no getting out of his "Pretty Boy" placement, 21 Jump street was comming to an end and Director John Waters (Pink Flamingo) was looking for one of the hottest young heartbreaking stars out there. Johnny now desperate to ditch the status he was given and signed on next to Ricki Lake and Traci Lords.
Next on the list for Depp was Tim Burtons Edward Scissorhands. Johnny would play Edward himself, a quirky looking, shy man isolated in a mansion on a large hill, overlooking a brightly coloured American suburbia. The mans hands are made out of pairs of scissors, and he is taken home by a caring woman and tries to live the "typical american" family life. Falls in love with her daughter and his presence eventually brings love to everyone in his new neighborhood. He outshined his co-star and fiance Winona Ryder. Johnny has been engaged previously to Dirty Dancings baby- Jennifer Grey and Twin Peaks Sherilyn Fenn but Depp said Ryder was "the one". Tattooed on his arm were the words Winona Forever. Which he changed to "Wino Forever" through laser surgery after they split. They met before they shot the film at the movie premiere for Great Balls Of Fire.
Whats Eating Gilbert Grape was one of the first movies on the large list that he did back to back after his split with Ryder. The time was 1993. The movie was based in small town Endora, Iowa. Johnny, who plays Gilbert Grape who is busy caring for his retarded brother Arnie (Leonardo Decaprio). His mother is a morbidly obese woman who has not left the house in 7 years since her husband killed himself in the basement. Juliette Lewis plays Johnny's love intrest in the movie as a girl named becky. His unusualy chaotic life gets in the way of the budding romance. A Typical drama.
Next came Benny and Joon a romantic comedy about how two misfits Sam (Depp) and Juniper (Mary Stuart Masterson) fall in love with eachother. This movie was known for Johnny's numerous stunts and for the song "Im Gonna Be" aka "500 Miles" by the proclaimers. Johnny's reputation was growing and he was known everywhere, but his personal life had yet again took a turn for the worse as he derailed with drinking heavily and doing drugs. Depp was miserable and the death of a man named River Phoenix died of a drug overdose outside of the bar Johnny co-owned with a pal called the Viper Room
